Exploring Namibia: A Road Trip Adventure

Table of Contents

Introduction

After spending the summer exploring my home country, it was time to hit the road again. We were embarking on a two-week long road trip around Namibia, a country in Africa located just north of South Africa on the west coast. Our journey was filled with excitement, unexpected experiences, and encounters with incredible wildlife. Join us as we share our adventure through this blog.

Arriving in Namibia

Our journey began at the airport, where we embarked on a series of flights that would take us to our final destination. After over 24 hours of travel, we finally arrived in Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia. The first leg of our road trip was off to an eventful start as we encountered a torrential downpour and witnessed a bus tipping over on the road. Despite these unexpected events, we made it to our first campsite, the Trans Kalahari Inn, located just 15 minutes away from Windhoek.

A Day at Nankuse Wildlife Sanctuary

Our first full day in Namibia was dedicated to visiting the Nankuse Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to a variety of rescued animals, including baboons, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs, caracals, and lions. We had the opportunity to witness and participate in a carnivore feed, where we got up close and personal with these magnificent creatures.

Our day began with a warm welcome from our guide, Solomon, who introduced us to the baboons. We then moved on to feed the cheetahs, two sisters who were brought to the sanctuary as orphaned cubs. It was incredible to see how comfortable they were around humans, a result of being bottle-fed and handraised.

Next, we had the chance to observe the leopards. Unlike the cheetahs, these majestic cats took their time to approach us. It was a slow and captivating experience as they swaggered over to us.

We then moved on to the African wild dogs, an endangered species with less than 500 left in the wild. Habitat loss has greatly affected their population, making them a rare sight. It was truly special to witness their pack dynamics and learn about their importance in the ecosystem.

Our next stop was with the caracals, small lynx-like cats with sandy-colored pelts and black tufty ears. These solitary animals showed us their fierce nature, hissing at each other as they interacted.

Finally, we reached the lions. Before getting out of the car, our guide emphasized the importance of respecting these powerful creatures. The lions at Nankuse are all rescued, and it was heartwarming to see them in a safe environment where they can thrive.

Exploring Namibia

After our incredible experience at Nankuse, we continued our road trip, encountering both challenges and moments of joy. Our car's air conditioning stopped working, but the car hire company quickly replaced it for us. We arrived at our second campsite, ready for a good night's rest and excited for the adventures that awaited us.

Throughout our journey, we were constantly reminded of the beauty of Namibia's landscapes and the importance of conservation. The country's commitment to protecting its wildlife and natural wonders is truly commendable.
